Anticipation and Surprise

For my birthday my husband and sister gave me a most memorable gift, a visit to Germany to see my family – all by myself.  I can’t recall a time in my married life I have traveled alone for an extended trip.

My sister and I planned the visit shortly after Christmas. Since my birthday is one day after my other, little sister’s birthday, we thought it would be the perfect time to surprise her. We kept this trip a secret – from everyone!

A few weeks ago, when we were on the phone planning how to unveil the surprise, we were getting giddy, tried to imagine mom and dad’s face and how the rest of the family would react. We dreamed about it together and called each other several more times to share the excitement. I began to question if it was worth having my family forfeit this feeling of joy and anticipation. Was the joy in the surprise as wonderful as the joy in the anticipation? We stuck to the plan and didn’t tell a soul.

When the day came, we had butterflies and couldn’t stop smiling. My sister had arranged a brunch for my little sister’s special day at my mom and dad’s. When everyone was seated and they were passing the food around, my sister quietly texted me.

When I walked in, the faces all over the room turned slowly from befuddled to smiles and laughter. My mom and dad, my nieces, brothers-in-law and of course my little sister were overjoyed. At first people were unable to comprehend but then we hugged and cried together. The surprise was a success.

This morning, while looking at a German sunrise from my desk by a window, I still am basking in this feeling of joy. I wonder if Jesus is anticipating our arrival in Heaven. I wonder if the table is already set and if He is gathering a few more things, making it special for us. I wonder if He can’t wait to be seated with us to enjoy our company.

Jesus, our Redeemer and Friend, our Savior and Brother, our King and Lord, will one day gather His Bride, those who love Him and have trusted Him. We must not keep Him a secret though. We must tell others of His great love for us. We must share His kindness and tender care, His goodness and that He came to die for our sins so we can be with Him.

I can truly image the joy I will experience when someone who’s heart turned to Christ because I obeyed the Spirit and spoke, will tap me on the shoulders at that feast and say, “I am here!”

“Go therefore to the main roads and
invite to the wedding feast as many as you find.”
Matthew 22:9

“Lord, make me bold. Help me to speak about you, not for my sake, but for the sake of someone’s eternal destiny and for the sake of Jesus Christ.”

What a wonderful analogy, Heidi! I almost felt the excitement you described when you walked through the door. That they were so filled with joy to see you, and the idea that Jesus could be filled with that same joy to see us, warms my heart. Thank you for this insightful post.

Thank you for reading, Terri. It was such a great visit and I miss them more now than ever. I look forward to the day when we get to sit with Jesus with all those who know Him. Let’s pray that while we are here, we invite as many as we can to the party! I am grateful you are doing your part on your end! I admire you and your strength… You are God’s beloved!

Oh Debbie, I can’t wait for the day He will reveal Himself. Lets continue to pray that we will be able to tell as many people as possible about His great love for us … I can’t wait to hang out then and say, “He was worth it all!”

I LOVE how you found parallels between your arrival in Germany and our arrival in heaven.I think my heart started beating a little faster, just thinking about the anticipation and surprise of THAT event! With you I pray: “Lord, make me bold. Help me to speak about you, not for my sake, but for the sake of someone’s eternal destiny and for the sake of Jesus Christ.” AMEN, Heidi!

Dear Heidi, how well you seem to be led by the Spirit of our Lord. The Feast is a post on my blog that relates a similar thought to our Lord’s waiting for us. 🙂

Hi my friend!!!!!!!!! What a wonderful thing to be able to suprise them! I bet your family took great delight in the birthday suprize! Your hubby showed me and it was so fun to see!!!
I love how you refer this to Heaven! I love the picture of Jesus being excited about our arrival! Zephaniah 3 gives us a small example of this! ” The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing!” I can just feel the excitement!!! Miss you Heidi!!

Heidi! You’ve been on my heart all week! I’m so grateful that the surprise you and your sister had hoped for worked out so beautifully! As I read your post I could picture everything in my mind–especially the startled looks on their faces that quickly turned into shouts of joy and wonder when they first saw you. While savoring those images in my mind I thought of another “surprise” moment recorded so long ago: “On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’” (John 20:19) Thank you for helping me to “fast forward” to Christ’s return and the wondrous reunion to come. I can’t help but anticipate His eyes dancing as those seated around His table try to take it all in . . . SURPRISE! ❤️

Again, I am sitting and enjoying a sunrise outside my window. This morning it is an American sunrise. While I am sad that I am looking at this beautiful trip back now, I am overjoyed that the Son is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow and we can entrust our loved ones into His capable hands. Thank you, dearest Kathie, for your prayers and your love. SO grateful we will be sitting at that table together one day!!!
