Several months ago, God had me cross paths with a beautifully dedicated woman. Her heart for the homeless in Chicago and deep desire to make a difference, one soul at a time, inspired me to the point of wanting to join her, even if only in small ways.
As I prayed about how to be involved in her ministry to the homeless, I felt the Lord prompting my heart to start collecting five dollar gift cards for a fast food restaurant chain to send to her. Such gift cards can provide opportunities to get out of the rain and cold weather. Friends and family loved the idea and cards started to pour in. God supplied through a steady stream, and I was able to send cards to Chicago on a regular base. I started to feel pretty good about doing my part. After all, we have so much in comparison to others.
These thoughts were jarred when I received an email from my friend in Chicago. She told me about a recent meeting at the day-center for homeless. She shared with me how excited each person was to receive such a card. When she handed out the cards on this particular morning, she found that the amount of cards matched the amount of homeless who were there, exactly. She wrote:
“It was awesome and each person was so grateful and happy and I heard the words, “Wow, thank you … Wow, this is so nice…I can really use this…” I replied as always, “Don’t thank me …I didn’t even ask Heidi to do this …God brought her in…so we all prayed for you!!!”Β
As I read those last words, I felt deeply humbled and felt as if God spoke once again across my heart. “Before my throne the ground is level. There is no difference between you and the homeless. Don’t think you are better or have something that makes you more valuable. I have given you to each other to show you my love.”
“Father, please forgive me
when I think my possessions make me more usable
or even more valuable.
Show me how to love authentically.
Show me how to value life deeply.
Show me how to live generously.
Show me how to serve humbly.
Show me how to walk like Jesus.

So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abrahamβs seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Galatians 3:26-28
