Looking for Steeples

The view from the window seat of the small plane was perfect, not only to look onto the beautiful countryside,  but also for hiding my tear-filled eyes. I prayed silently for God to comfort my aching heart. Woods and fields, similar to the ones I had walked for the past three weeks, looked like colorful mosaic carpets. Roads and rivers appeared like mere squiggly lines. As we were approaching  Zurich for our last layover, the captain’s voice interrupted my thoughts. He announced that we would have to fly several loops over the city, due to heavy traffic.

Really? My heart wanted to hurry up and get home, not miss the flight back to Chicago. Then I heard a small voice speak across my heart, “Look for the steeples!”

By now, buildings and houses, roads and paths were recognizable. I obeyed and then, there in the middle of a small town saw the first steeple, then another and another. There were so many churches everywhere. I saw great steeples of magnificent cathedrals, as well as small tiny steeples, barely reaching past the rooftops of the homes around them.  They surely were built by people with great visions and sold out hearts for the Lord. As I kept looking, I found my heart overwhelmed with an awareness of the closeness of my God.

“I am with you, no matter where you go.
I will never leave nor forsake you.
You can’t hide from me, nor can you go anywhere I can’t reach.
I am with you.”

I remembered my friends and church family back in the States. A deep gratitude flooded my heart. I knew that God has a plan for my life. Where I live is not an accident. Where He places me is not a coincidence.

God does not live under the steeples of great and small churches, but instead He chose to make His people His temple, never to leave nor forsake them. The Most High God and Maker of the Universe made His dwelling among men. He lives in our hearts through Christ. His Holy Spirit, is a deposit and a witness to the fact that He never leaves nor forsakes me.

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,

Heidi . . . what a blessings to be still enough to hear His quite whispers . . . look . . . listen . . . see . . . hear. So often I am so busy doing that I can’t hear them . . . but when most anxious about things I hear Him say . . . “Give that to Me” and I do without hesitation and He takes my thoughts with Him and gives me His peace. Thank you for sharing your Steeple Experience with us. ~ Blessings always abundantly to you from our Lord ~

Thank you for sharing how God used your birds-eye view of steeples to minister encouragement to your hurting heart. Your reminder that God’s Spirit resides within us is worth reviewing everyday. His presence is truly an astounding phenomenon! May God bless you with continued peace and joy as you settle in back home.

I am learning more and more that He desires us to know that presence. He displays His kindness and goodness all around us… so often we don’t ask for Him to help us see … but when we do … we are so blessed with that awareness! Hope you catch glimpses of His mighty presence with you today, blogging friend 🙂

I have only been to Europe once, and was so completely entranced that sometimes I feel ‘homesickness’ for it. It is hard to be separated from spaces and places and people we love – I love that one day, there will be no more good-byes necessary. I’m glad that you had such a good visit home – and that you take it with you in spirit as you go. It lives and breathes within you, is a part of your genetics and disposition and character – and that is a true gift.

Hmm. In light of the Word which tells us that we are the temple, it’s too bad we aren’t as “religious” about what we do in our temples…thoughts, actions, housekeeping…as we are with buildings, isn’t it?

I so agree! I clean houses for a living and am amazed how much time is spent on cleaning the outside rather than the inside … Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, Tami!

I love how tender your heart is towards the promptings of his Spirit. Heidi, your words and images remind me, too, that our home is in Him. I will not miss goodbyes when we fly away from here.

Blessings, dear poet friend ~ Wendy

Yes, our home is indeed with/in Him. One day we will get to be HOME … a place where we wont say goodbye anymore! Let’s make sure we share those Good News, and the Lord who made it possible to get there! Thanks so much for your always kind comments. What an encouragement!

So lovely Heidi. Missing loved ones is exquisitely painful at times. It seems as if nothing will fill the emptiness; but we know that Christ does and always will fill that void.

    The tears may fall
    But He catches them all
    And will draw rainbows
    In each little one
    He’ll never leave you
    Forsake you
    He’ll comfort
    Protect you
    And
    Cover you
    With His love
    Like a shawl.
