Longing

sunrise, weeping willow

We long …

Longing for the earth to release her beauty in spring.

Longing for coolness and shade on a sun-scorched summer’s day.

Longing for the harvest to ripen in fall.

Longing for snow to cover the gray earth in winter.

Longing again for the last snow to melt.

We go on longing and seeking.

Here, within a groaning earth, we keep on longing…

Longing not to long!

~

“Father, teach my longing soul, that You are all I need.
Satisfy my hunger with the Bread of Life.
Quench my thirst with the Living Water.
Satisfy my heart with your Love.
Make me aware of Your abiding presence.
Make my ambition to know You.
Make me hunger for Your justice.
Make me thirst for Your righteousness.
Make me love with Your love.”
~

“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
(Matthew 5:3-12)

Longing not to long. As my grandmother and grandmother’s sister used to say in wistful understanding, “Ja, ja…”

  2. Ah, yes – the tragedy and simplicity and impossibility and desperate need in the human heart, that longing that can’t quite be satisfied in a tarnished earth. To squelch it is to shut down the soul, to encourage it is to risk everything – but in the end, to live! Lovely piece, Heidi..

  3. Heidi, I love how you begin with expressing the longings of mankind and then lead us to what God desires us to long for. Beautifully done!
