Some Awe vs. Awesome

So often I rush about, seeking recognition, and trying to make myself indispensable and important. Resting and slowing down to see the beauty in nature seem counter cultural and counter self. But here in the rest and outside, my mind is able to chase the unfathomable, the unbelievable, and find glimpses of God.  Here I learn awe.

The world provides us with plenty of awe-inspiring stories. Human records, inventions, accomplishments, and achievements, all leave us with some awe. However, the God of the universe beckons us to find him awesome. He invites us to seek Him and find Him, long for Him, and be satisfied by Him. No human effort, however clever, can come close to the sense we get when we see the God of the Universe displaying His power and love to us.

Nature is the best evangelist. It speaks the loudest to our desire for the Awesome. It does not leave us saying “I wish I could do that!”, no… it leaves us filled with the knowledge of being loved. It shouts of the Maker’s heart toward humanity. It shows us our place in this world. It tells us how intimately we are loved. God invites us to yearn for the revelation of the Awesome, rather than be satisfied with finding “some awe”.

The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
Day to day pours forth speech,
And night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words;
Their voice is not heard.
 Their line has gone out through all the earth,
And their utterances to the end of the world.
(Psalm 19:1-4)
