A Greater Darkness

I step out with my coffee into a cold November morning. I tilt my head and glance into what seems a motionless universe. Orion stretches his shield over my roof in the south, as he does every autumn and winter. Will he ever let go of his wrath? To the north, the big dipper still tilts and threatens to dump a load of stars between the neighbors oaks, who pose like open curtains to this motionless play. A shooting star flings its last light into my gaze. I never understood how the demise of anything could be someone’s fortune. Silence and darkness become a blank canvas for my thoughts.

“Lord, speak to me.”

My hands fold a little tighter around the warm mug.

In the east, the morning slowly pulls back the star cover. My eyes try to hang on to the flickering, to these whispers of greatness. I realize that with the coming of the sun, the greater display will disappear. Soon, with the onset of the new day, I will have forgotten how big the universe really is.

Heidi, this was beautiful. Your description of the night sky and the quiet transition into dawn drew me right into the scene.

As someone who is registered blind, I don’t experience the stars as I once did, but your words reminded me that God’s creation still speaks of His greatness in ways that go far beyond what our eyes can see. I especially appreciated your thought that the coming of the greater light causes the stars to disappear from view, not because they are gone, but because something even greater has come. There’s a wonderful spiritual picture in that.

Thank you for another thoughtful meditation that lifts our eyes, and our hearts, to the Creator. God bless you.

I too revel in the early morning quiet, but could never capture its unique grandeur as you can Heidi. Thank you for sharing the beauty of your prose with us!

Thank you, Heidi. This reminds me of Psalm 8
“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
For You have made him a little lower than the angels,
And You have crowned him with glory and honor.”
