Doing Church

“Hi. My name is Heidi and I am a people junky!”

I love people (for most part mostly most of them). I love them like the books I read. I try to understand them and get their point. I love them them at the dining room table and in my living room. They intrigue me, make me wonder about their stories and what is hidden on the pages of their lives.
That’s why I greet new people at church. I don’t mind (even when they do). I leave conversations with friends because a new person just skipped by the corner of my eye. “Hang on! I’ll be right back!” (I try not to lie, but this one slips out every time!).

When I went to our Facebook church on Sunday and saw that our small congregation exploded with 2.6k views, I called my pastor and asked him, “How do you assimilate THAT?”

Here are few things I thought of as practical:

~Go to online church if you can. Hey, you can eat your breakfast and don’t even need to brush your teeth (ok, maybe for those sitting next to you on the couch).

~Now is the time to invite people. People from all over the world can make it to your church. Invite your missionary friends you only see once a year. We had our friends from Africa join. Their internet even held up for the time we were meeting.

~Hang out in groups after church and during the week for Bible studies. We have changed platforms a couple of times. That was annoying. But with patience you will figure out an app that works for you. Try to avoid those apps that have time limits. We didn’t realize how wonderful it was to meet and we were so sad when our feed cut after the time ran out. It made me realize how desperate we are for talking with one another.

~PRAY FOR YOUR PASTOR. This is not the time to let him know that he is clueless. Guess what … He is. Nobody knows how to deal with this. As the Body of our Lord, we can work this out. Jesus is still the head.

~Go through your church directory and get to know the elderly in your church. While we are so busy downloading our apps, they might benefit from a good ole call.

How are you doing church these days? What has worked for you?

“Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:19-25 (ESV)

We’re loving the livestream worship service from our church on Sundays. It’s so good to see and hear our worship leaders and pastors. Last Saturday we were able to hold our women’s event, opened up to one and all, via livestream as well. And guess what the theme was, chosen last November? Anxiety!! (Our daughter-in-law, a family physician and psychiatrist, was the speaker.) Our Bible study group is continuing to do the homework each week; the leader and I are emailing each week about what we’re learning. Others may be responding to her also–I don’t know. Facebook has also been a good way to keep in touch. However, I can only imagine the euphoria we’ll experience when we can finally gather together. What used to be “normal” will suddenly look very exciting!

We should touch base, friend. I facilitate a couple of women’s studies this way … my hubs and I are also facilitating a small group after church on Sundays. It works all really well. I don’t think the enemy is pleased 🙂 It makes me homesick for heaven, I tell you!

Marshall and I were just sitting down trying to figure out how to download and log into Zoom– where our Small Group and Bible study are setting up meetings starting this Sunday. Our church has been streaming on FB for quite a while so that piece should be good. What a blessing from the Lord to have these things so we can reach out and encourage one another as well as worship Him! Giving thanks to our faithful Provider!

We used that app last Sunday for our small group. Unfortunately, the free version gave us only 40 minutes. I know you and Marshal will be a wonderful encouragement for your group. Yes, He is indeed our faithful Provider! Sending a big hug and much love your way! ❤️

Thank you, dear Heidi! We are all figuring this out as we go. I love the encouragement to pray for and encourage our pastors, and the community around us. The more outward we are, the more blessing and joy we experience. God bless you, your pastor, and the communities that surround you. ♥

Heidi! Thank so much for you encouraging words! I can tell you that the “group” i work with is really having a hard time with this “no-church -building church” and how importiant it is to reach out to those who are not Tech Suave or in my “group” not at all tech. I would encourage reaching out with phone calls and (heres a weird one..) a written letter… oooooh:) Im so happy the church can still get-together even if my coffe cup is at my house and yours is at your house! But thank you so mich Heidi for all the encouragement!

Yes, sweet friend … and amen to what you said. I miss hugging you neck! I printed out about 200 photos this weekend and made cards from card-stock. I have been sending them to people. Yes, letters… those things you can keep and pull out every so often and read over and over. (I keep a love letter from Scott in my wallet from 32 years ago). Thank you for your encouragement to me. ❤️

you too seem to be a great blessing. I love the blog name just as I loved what the Bible said of David being a man after God’s own heart…..wasn’t that just awesome?

Hello Heidi. My church is shutdown and have chosen not to stream a sermon. I watch 5 services on television Sunday, most were favorite teachers of mine. I am associated with a second congregation. They stream live, but the teaching pastor is down with the flu, not COVID-19. So, for now, it’s mainly TV services for me.

Praying for your teaching pastor now, Alan.
What you do here, encouraging with your words and presence, is such a blessing. Life and Church is looking different for now … maybe forever. I am praying your heart stays filled with His presence and encouraged. You were made “for such a time as this”, dear brother. Keep going!!!!
