The other day my teenage daughter came to me with a photo of her when she was a toddler. Because we adopted her when she was older, I didn’t know her back then. She told me what she remembered about the photo and the circumstances. It made us chuckle at the changes that have taken place between then and now.

I am reminded of this conversation as I am processing the news of a well known ex-pastor who renounced his faith. Many years ago his message on dating had swept through Christian circles like a wildfire. Today, he has apologized for the message of that book and has changed his mind on Jesus altogether.Ā

I must admit it scares me a little. When those who made undeniable commitments to relationships, spouses, and their faith suddenly walk away, what is one to think and do?

The fact is that humans change. From the time we are conceived to the time we leave this earth we are in the constant process of change. Good and bad. Beside the physical changes that occur, we become different friends, spouses, parents, and different followers of Christ. I am not the child I used to be, nor the wife I was 30 years ago, nor the mother I was to my babies. I am also not the Christian I was when I first gave my heart to Jesus.

As Christians we are to look to the One who doesn’t change and His unchanging Word. He has chosen to pour out His eternal, unchanging message through imperfect, changing vessels. While we are encouraged in the Word to be Holy as God is Holy so that the love of God can be seen, we must also understand our depravity before God without Jesus.Ā

The Gospel does not change. It was set in place before God created man and always will be the only means by which we can approach His throne for allĀ Eternity. The messengers change. The message does not.Ā

When I grow in the knowledge of such amazing news and in the understanding of my depravity, the Gospel becomes greater. The awareness of God’s grace to me becomes an ever-increasing gift. This awareness of God’s unchanging love toward me may continue to change me toward more Christlikeness. However, I must let humility do its changing work.Ā

While we may become frustrated with the changes in our lives and the people around us, we can be assured that God and His Gospel do not change.

Numbers 23:19
God is not human, that he should lie,
Ā Ā Ā Ā not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Ā Ā Ā Ā Does he promise and not fulfill?
~
“Lord, everything around me seems to change continually.Ā
Please keep me from making idols of flawed ideas and feeble people.
Keep me steadfastly chasing after Christ and YourĀ Word, which stand forever.”

Paul’s words in II Timothy 3 come to mind: “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of Godā€” 5having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” (Verses 1-5) EXCELLENT POST, HEIDI!

It is heartbreaking to see people of faith turn their backs on Jesus. We know a pastor who abandoned his ministry and family several years ago. I continue to pray that he will return to the truth and his family healed. It’s all I know to do–to plead their case before our miracle-working God.

Yes! Praying! I think of the Father in Luke 15. What a God we have who waits patiently, compassionately, and with open arms when we return. Let’s also pray we guard our own doctrine, our walk and commitment to one another and Jesus.
      1 Timothy 4:16
Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.

    Amen, Heidi!
Ironically, I just read the news about this man before coming to your blog. It’s a sad situation for this man and his family. I bought my daughters his book when they were teenagers. I was shocked to read the news, but… He is just a man and I think we will see a lot more men and women in Christian leadership fall away in these last days. We have to learn not to trust in man. Anyone who turns away from Christ does so because they believe their opinions are better than God’s word – by definition it’s self-righteousness. Just keep your eyes on Jesus!

I noticed a progression in Joshua Harris’ turning from his faith. After much criticism, he doubted that God gave him a message, which did not fit in with today’s promiscuous culture. (He made a video explaining how wrong he was.) Then he doubted that the message applied to him and his marriage. (He separated from his wife.) Then he doubted the God who gave him that message. (He walked away from his faith.) The later is probably the most evil of all choices, since it sweeps many people with it … and that is always the enemies goal.
You are right, while God uses the community of believers to encourage one another, we must keep our eyes on Jesus.

The LGBT issue is dividing the church and even families. This will increase rapidly. It’s sad. I am praying for Josh Harris and his family. As I said, his book was one of the resources I used when raising our girls. You know what – my daughter and now son-in-law waited to kiss until they were pronounced man and wife. They have three kids so they figured it out šŸ™‚

I look at the disciples, Paul, missionaries, and martyrs over the centuries and many of today. They were/are willing to die for their faith. They knew and know Christ so well, intimately. Through their fiery trials they grew in resolve, knew Jesus would never leave them.
Something is not right in the evangelical church of today. I say I don’t believe in a prosperity Gospel, but if God does not give me my desires, like same sex, my health, my rest, my time, He must not be real. By his own admission, Joshua could not come to bring a secular worldview and his Biblical faith under one roof. One had to go. So he to threw out this baby of faith with the bathwater.
This whole thing makes me scrutinize my evangelical beliefs. I think I smell idol-making and prosperity Gospel.

      Thanks for stopping in, Joe!
I am trying to memorize 2 Corinthians 4:16-18 which says,
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Blessings to you as you keep your eyes on the eternal, unchanging One.

We can easily fall into the trap of “idol-making”. Jesus is Jesus and people are people. One is God the others are not šŸ™‚ Thanks for your steadfastness, dear friend. Praying for perseverance!
