I walked along the waterfront,
Beside a peaceful pond,
When from beneath my feet I picked
A rock out of the sand.

Without much thought I tossed the thing,
Into the quiet mirror.
It made a splash and ripples great
Which slowed as they got nearer.

I watched as impact gently weaned –
As circles drew their route.
I asked the Lord in quiet thought,
“Is this what life’s about?”

He whispered with His silent voice,
“My child, it’s not like that.
When I will toss you in my will
It is the opposite.

At first there is no great big splash
When you, my child, obey.
You just might never know and see
My ripples in your day.

But you must trust and still obey,
Though you think it’s in vain.
For in my will your life may cause
The surges that bring rain.”

John 6:9
“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish,
but what are they for so many?”

“Lord, teach my heart to obey you in the small things.
Even though I might not see what you will do with my seemingly insignificant offering, help me trust that You can do great miracles with what I give You.”

Lovely thoughts. I was just at a women’s conference and this story was referenced, with the idea that we can give God our little bits and he can multiply our offerings. I so love that when I am feeling especially small He is especially BIG!

We must be content not seeing … and only trusting that our love and life lived for Him bears much fruit! Thanks, Melody for taking time to read and comment 🙂

Heidi, your insightful poem reminded me of Isaiah 55:11, where God says, “My word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” I’m thinking that, in addition to God-inspired words spoken, those deeds that manifest God’s word will also “not return to him empty.” What a celebration is coming, when all the surges that brought rain will be revealed! (Love that image!) Thank you, Heidi, for the joy of anticipation you stirred with this post! I’m also prayerful–that I might not miss any opportunity to add to those surges.

Yes, that is such a fitting passage! I agree with you in that I desire to be used by God disproportioately to who I am… but always in light of who He is 🙂 Thanks, Nancy! Praying for you today!

So so perfect for me Heidi! Thank you for listening to His voice and obeying . . .and sharing with us too! I was talking to Jesus about something similar to not making a big splash or seeing any ripple affect. That day He told me that I just was having trouble seeing how very very important the few people I do serve, were to Him. :). Love and blessings!

You are so right, Debbie! I think we all want to do big things for God out of our love for Him. However, He is the One that makes big things out of all our small offerings. … and really, what could we give the Lord of the Universe that would impress Him? He already owns it all … “God help me to surrender!” Thanks for your blogging-friendship over the years. God has used each small encouragement you have left me (and others)!!! Love and blessings to you

I love this!! Thanks Heidi for this insight! And the part that “we must trust and obey” . We may never know the impact of being in Gods will. But we must obey and be willing to let God “toss us into His will!” Thinking about how my obedience might bring the rain into someone elses life is exciting. We never know what our simple obedient actions might produce! Love ya my friend! Hugs Wendy

Heidi, this was a new thought for me that brought great delight. Sure, most people have thought about the ripple effect, but, in the opposite way to what you have described here. It gives me great hope that even if, in my lifetime, I might not see the effect right now that my life lived for Jesus has wrought; nonetheless it will at sometime be seen and felt, because of the work of the blessed Holy Spirit. Thank you for sharing what God whispered to your heart. Also, the photos are exquisite.

Thank you, Jacquie, for your encouragement. The Lord is always using what we give Him in faith. The World likes to tell us that it’s about the big splash and that we need to make big waves. Really it’s about God’s work, not ours 🙂 Keep going and leave the wave-making to God. Sending love your way!

Beautiful and profound, Heidi. “He whispered with His silent voice . . . “–what a beautiful expression of how God speaks to the hearts of His people! Thank you for the love and encouragement you offer to a hurting world. ❤️
