Digging Wells

Been sitting here in this pit for a while.
It’s deep in the ground, I bet it’s a mile.
Been digging this hole for days, until now
Lost track of the time and sunlight somehow.

It’s dark and lonely, here in this sad well.
I wonder how long I must sit and dwell.
You see, I started to dig- not content
The way I was going – the way I went.

I thought I’d find treasures by digging around,
By making a well with my eyes on the ground.
Now I can see, while in darkness I grope
I must look up, only there is my hope.

I wasn’t made to dig wells in the earth,
But made to look up while for answers I search.
Made seeking my comfort in things above –
Made for digging into God’s endless love.

“Lord, help me to seek Your Living Water, not in man-made wells,
but in Jesus Christ.”
~

“but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him
will never be thirsty again.
The water that I will give him
will become in him a spring of water
welling up to eternal life.”
Jesus, John 4:14 (ESV)

One advantage (among many!) of growing older is understanding that digging in the detritus of this world in order to find joy and satisfaction is futile. Just as you’ve pointed out in this thought-provoking poem: looking up is our only hope. Jesus is the Source of joy, peace, fulfillment, and more. Once again, your creative ways with ideas and words (Oh–and photos, too!) have expressed truth in a memorable way. Thank you, Heidi!

How quick we are to let our eyes (and spirits) drop down, digging in the earth for what we think will satisfy us. Your poem reminded me of this verse, Jeremiah 2:13 “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Living water! What a beautiful picture of Jesus forever there to refresh and quench our thirst. Blessings as you write with Him in mind, Heidi.

Thank you for the Scripture! What a great reminder it is to us. It baffles the mind to think that we’d rather drink stale and filthy waters than quench our thirst on the pure Living Water. Blessings to you as well, sister!

I’ve been digging my own wells for far too long, and you’re absolutely right. Our only hope is to look up. Therefore, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)

Heidi, this poem really ministered to me. Thank you.

    Love,
    Cheryl

Our wells take on so many different looks, don’t they. Our own flesh, along with the devil and the world, try hard to keep our eyes on the ground. But you are so right, our help is not in anything we can find here, only in Jesus Christ. Thanks for your words of encouragement, dear Cheryl. Be blessed!
