The Cost of Obedience

early morning 016

God is not safe. As a matter of fact, when He asked my husband and me some time ago to step out on a faith-tightrope onto a particular calling, we found that He had removed all security nets from under our feet as well. No plan-b or back-ups were available. It quickly became obvious to us, that without God we could never succeed in this call. One night my husband stopped as we were walking to the house and as he looked into the star-filled sky, he prayed out loud. “God, if you are not going with us, we will die!”

He was right, God was asking us to the impossible. We had to make a choice to trust the One who flung those stars into existence, or continue to walk in our own seemingly safe ways. We decided to obey.

When I look at the Word of God, I find it has much to say about the cost of obedience. Followers of Christ always have been and always will be paying a high price for walking in His steps. His demands on his first disciples were harsh. He asked them to leave what they knew best, nets and all. God did not promise them comfort and safety then, nor does He give it to us today.

However, what we do find is a God who is near, nearer than our own breath. He promises Himself, injected deep into our dire need.

In our weakness He becomes a strong tower.
In our sickness He becomes the healer.
In our insecurity he becomes a sure foundation.
In our foolishness He becomes our wisdom.
In our desperation He becomes our hope.
In our darkness He becomes Light.

Surrender requires giving our all. Obedience cost Christ everything. Obedience will cost us as well. Following Jesus, in an increasing hostile world, requires boldness wrapped in His love. It requires that we give up our rights as citizens of this world and embrace our rights as heavenly ones. With the Lord of Heaven and Earth on our side, we can dare to surrender all.

 early morning 009“Safe?” said Mr. Beaver;
“don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you?
Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe.
But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
~

“When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you; And through the rivers,
they will not overflow you
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be scorched,
Nor will the flame burn you.”
Isaiah 43:2

Loved this, when you are going through a hard time and God does not give you full disclosure of his plan it is easy to think you are the only one having to endure and keep going thank you for reminding me others share the same trials.
I will keep you in my prayers Godbless

You make a strong point: Choose to trust the One who flung stars into existence or continue in your own seemingly safe ways. Why wouldn’t I wholeheartedly follow the all-powerful Star Maker?! Why would I think my weak, finite ways are going to be safer?! Thank you, Heidi, for once again expressing truth with sharp clarity.

Thank you for these words. They remind us that when the Lord told His disciples and us to take up our cross and follow Him, He wasn’t talking about some burden of life that’s a result of our own foolishness. To the NT Jew, the cross was an instrument of death, not a burden of life. We have to “die” before we can find out that He alone is truly the source of “life”. Thanks again for your post.

I have been finding that I filter much of what I say these days through the lens of the persecution of our brothers and sisters in Christ. If what I say today is not true for them, then it might not be truth at all.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting, a blessing to me today

Thank you for this encouragement, Heidi. Just this week I was dwelling a lot on this same idea. Risking and stepping out into the uncomfortable takes bold faith. Even when it’s uncomfortable, He is still up to something good and He is near. Thanks as always for sharing your beautiful insight!

Well stated. True faith in God means trusting obedience and obedient trust. The two — trust and obey — cannot be separated.

A tightrope without a net–that’s life in 5 words, alright; but we’re held by an invisible Eternal Hand and Heart. Continuing to pray for you and the fam–God bless.

Thank you for another beautifully encouraging post Heidi. So true about ‘leaving our nets’ behind as well. Nets are a false sense of security. They hold us as we merrily follow the world; but make the wrong move and down we fall, right through the ‘holes’. With Jesus, how can we possibly fall through the Solid Rock. God bless xxx

He is our only security … we build on sinking sand if we trust in the world. but Christ never fails us! So grateful you stopped in, sister! Be blessed as you trust Him in all you do 🙂
