Ice and snow made the paths treacherous. I was not in the mood of falling again. Once was enough. (I also much rather get an increased heart rate from a brisk walk than from falling headlong in the snow.) I pulled the traction spikes across the bottom of my boots. As the rubber parts stretched securely over my feet, small spikes protruded from my soles and heels. Eagerly I stepped out of the car. Immediately I noticed the difference. I was able to plant my feet firmly into the ice and snow, and after several trial steps onto frozen puddles, I knew this was money well spent.
The quiet of the forest and predictability of the path in front of me, brought such peace to my heart. Now with the traction I needed, I enjoyed miles of intimate fellowship with the Lord. I was elated to be able to have a good grip.
As I was walking, I was reminded of my faith. Often, I have to travel on faith-roads that are slippery. The circumstances and problems that are before me make my walk unstable. Insecurities and fears of falling make it seemingly impossible to step out in faith. Opposition and doubt keep me from trusting the path God has laid out for me.
God in His sovereign knowledge has given me
one sure and steady help –
the Holy Spirit.
He not only guides me, but also gives my faith-feet the necessary traction. In Him I can walk steadfastly, securely, and surely into each new step the Father has for me. He is my Ever-present Help on the daunting roads of life.
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper,
to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth,
whom the world cannot receive,
because it neither sees him nor knows him.
You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”
John 14:15-17
