Gifts with the Garbage

Gifts on Christmas Eve Morning 012Today, the alarm went off early. The gift was ready to go, sitting by the front door. In a see-through, large, airtight bag it looked quite pretty. The card read, “TO THE GARBAGE COLLECTOR – THANK YOU!”

I had securely tied a flashlight (a 200 hour LIFE GEAR, glow in the dark, with a neon blue flash option) to the wrapped chocolates. I headed out the door and, like last week, I placed the gift in a shallow cardboard box on top of the garbage. He could not miss it this time. (You can read here how he missed it last time.)

There the gift sat, in the darkness of an early morning, flashing in a blue hue on top of the garbage. Here I sat, by my window, waiting for it to be found. In the stillness of the morning and with a cup of coffee, I stared at my blinking garbage can. In the darkness and snow, the flickering green container reminded me more of a Christmas decoration than a pile of junk. Slowly but surely the sun was rising and filled the darkness with another blue hue. Light snow fell to the ground and within a short time as daylight appeared, what once flashed so pretty, again seemed like ordinary garbage.

There and then I decided not to let this one get chucked, but instead hand it personally to the man. I grabbed my hat and mittens and put on my boots and coat. I determined to shovel snow while waiting. I walked back and forth along the driveway, and as snow piled up at the end of my shovel, many thoughts and even tears flooded in.

“God, You placed Your precious Light into our darkness.
How patient You are with us.
As we ignorantly seek for better things in this life,
We carelessly disregard the priceless gift and treasure
You set our for us.
You came and placed Him – during the darkest part of our night –
In a dirty and filthy stable.
There in a feeding trough lay our Light of the Word.”

He did not look annoyed this time. He had a warm smile as he took the gift from my hand. I wished him Merry Christmas. He thanked me and drove off in his big green truck. The gift set securely on his dashboard.

I am grateful that this time he did take my gift – along with the garbage.

gifts in the garbage 004The
true light,
which gives
light

to everyone,was coming
into the world.
He was in the world,
and the world was made through him,
yet the world did not know him.
He came to his own, and his own people
did not receive him.
But to all who did receive him,
who believed in his name, he gave the right to
become children of God,
who were born, not of blood
nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man,
but
of God.

Christ is the greatest gift. We long for peace, for health, for love, for financial security. But even w/o those blessings, we have Him eternally. May you have a blessed Thanksgiving, Heidi. ❀

What a beautiful gesture, Heidi! Glad the man finally received the gift!! πŸ™‚ It is sad how people reject the beautiful gift of Christ God has given us. We have a great reason to rejoice when another one has received. I am so thankful we have a reason to celebrate God’s greatest gift!

Yes, it’s so sad that many rejects this beautiful gift. I did for years too and am so grateful God kept pursuing me. What a patient and kind God. Blessings to you as you celebrate His marvelous Gift, namely Jesus Christ!

Bravo Heidi! Ah, that we would learn and apply what the Lord modeled for all to see–He came down to enter this trash heap of a world to seek and save all who would receive and believe on His Name. Christmas Blessings to you and yours!

I was on the edge of my seat with you, Heidi–all my hopes wrapped up with yours, and praying you would not be disappointed this time (I KNOW what it’s like to give and be under-appreciated….). And of course, now he’s safe from the dreaded rabies. I totally love how you’ve synced this with God’s gift to us–His precious Son, quite unappreciated by a world so in need of ALL that HE IS. Makes me tearful. God bless you BIGGER–love, sis Caddo

Yes, Caddo… I so agree with you … Your comment made me think of a quote by C.S. Lewis, β€œIt would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” … not only do we not appreciate His gifts to us, but we are often not able to imagine all the things He can do in and through us!
You are a HUGE blessing to me …

Well thank you very much, Sis, I needed that! It’s been a ridiculous month of enemy attacks–and I haven’t yet replaced the “devil whacker” I mailed to another sis. So, instead of being strong and “kickin’ butt”, I’ve been other than what my blog would suggest (less joy, lots of curling up and whining–good grief). I just pulled out 2 more boxes of coloured lights–will drape them “somewhere” and pour a tall diet Pepsi…ahhh, Victory!!

After your first story yesterday I was thinking how so many have thrown out His gift to us, our Savior, as trash. Just as we were so saddened by what happened in your story, how sad God must feel when we reject Him and regard His gift to us as trash. God bless you for this blog and for your kindness. I’m sure your gift meant a lot to your trash man.

Thank you, Stephen. I am so grateful God was so patient all the years in the past when I was rejecting Him. All along, He kept flashing His Light around me.
Let’s keep shining His Light, Jesus Christ, for those on our path. We just don’t know when they are ready to see Him.
I wish you a very Merry CHRISTmas, dear friend. Thank you so much for your faithful blogs, always pointing us to prayer and the Word! You are appreciated!

Something similar happened to me today. I dropped a Christmas card in the mail box without a stamp on it, and then I waited a while for the mail truck to come and collect the letters, but he never came. Rats! Now what do I do? I hope my daughter gets it. Or maybe I should send another one.

Heidi, what a wonderful reminder of the gift that is available to all who receive it. It reminds me that I need to be that “flashing light” in the world! ~ Merry CHRISTmas and a blessed New Year to you and yours ~ PS I am jealous you have so much snow. I love the snow and we had a couple of inches but that old “Grinch” I call rain came an stole it away 😦

I am laughing and crying with this story. I am so happy he was finally blessed. I hope when he looks back on his day and every time he collects your non-present trash from now on, he will feel Jesus in his heart somehow.

    Well done, Sweet Friend!!
